Most users choose Plex because of its elegant interface and ability to handle large libraries of music, movies, and shows. But Plex can do a lot more than stream downloaded content. Through the use of Plex plugins, it’s easy to get your favorite web services on your TV and mobile devices.
We looked through everything Plex has to offer, tested about 80 plugins, and took notes on the little tricks you need to know to get it all working. These are 26 of our favorite Plex plugins, including 9 unofficial plugins that you may want to avoid.
Our favorite official Plex channels
As of version 1.8, Plex officially supports 89 plugins in their North American lineup. If you’re overseas, some of these plugins may not be listed, and others will be replaced by versions that work in your country. We’ve dug into the details to best point out each plugin’s quirks and note when a plug-in requires subscription fees.
Plex sells a premium service called Plex Pass, with features like synchronization with mobile devices, cloud storage integration, metadata and matchings for music, support for multiple users, parental controls, live TV and DVR, trailers and extras and cross-selling offers
Relations with content companies
Plex initially developed applications for services such as Hulu and Netflix. Hulu deployed “counter-measures” by creating changes specifically to prevent Plex from parsing their HTML. Netflix and Hulu services are no longer officially available with Plex.
Is plex secure?
Plex revealed the machine hosting its blog and forums had been compromised. Personal information such as IP addresses, forum private messages, email addresses, and hashed and salted passwords had been accessed.
The device can acquire content from sources such as iTunes, iPhoto and Aperture. The music library is another of the Plex metadata databases. This library allows for the automatic organization of a music collection by information stored in the ID3 or M4A tags, such as title, Plex works sort of like Netflix for your own library of media. You put all your movies, TV shows, and home movies on a hard drive, point the Plex server software at the files, and then enjoy watching them through the Plex client software which is available for many smart TV platforms.
A little Problem in plex
There are two big problems with Plex. The first is that compared to other options, it’s kind of a pain in the ass to set up. That hurdle is surmountable, but what’s really tough is legally filling Plex up with media. For everyone who is ripping DVDs to put on their Plex server, there are others using torrents or downloading potentially illegal streams.
